ANANTH KUMAR CALLS FOR NDC & ALL PARTY MEETING ON EMPOWERING URBAN LOCAL BODIES AS PER 74th AMENDMENT

MAYORS’ OFFICE TERM IS TOO SHORT FOR THEM TO FUNCTION EFFECTIVELY – VIJAY GOEL


Union Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Shri Ananth Kumar has appealed to the Prime Minister to convene an all party meeting to impress upon the political parties on the need to empower urban local bodies as per the recommendations of 74th amendment of the Constitution. He was addressing Mayors from various parts of the country, here today. Shri Kumar also emphasised on the need for the National Development Council to deliberate on the issue and arrive at a consensus on empowering urban local bodies with adequate administrative and financial powers and sought the help of Minister of State in PMO, Shri Vijay Goel to convene these meetings during this winter session.

Speaking on the occasion MOS (PMO), Shri Vijay Goel expressed concern over the plight of urban local bodies and advised all political parties in city corporation to arrive at a consensus on the need to empower these bodies as per the provision of 74th amendment of the Constitution and pass a unanimous resolution to that effect. He requested Urban Development Minister to take the initiative and send the proposal to the Prime Minister immediately so that a decision can be taken at the earliest. Shri Goel indicated his support for creating Mayors-in-Council system in the capital and also said that the term of office of Mayors is too short for them to function effectively.

Shri Ananthkumar announced that his ministry would co-sponsor the forthcoming SAARC Mayors Conference at Indore.
