COMMUNITY RADIO BROADCASTING FROM EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS


The Government proposes to soon introduce Community Radio Broadcasting in Universities, IITs and Residential Schools. This would be extended to other educational institutions and organizations later.

Delivering the Presidential Address at a Conference organized by the Broadcast Engineering Society (India) to mark the 3rd National Public Service Broadcasting Day, here today, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj said that the Narrowcasting introduced during the last fortnight from 12 Doordarshan stations for broadcasting in rural areas in the local language has been welcomed as a revolutionary system. India is the first country to introduce Narrowcasting in television, she said. The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ramesh Bais also addressed the gathering.

Delivering the Keynote Address, the Executive Managing Editor of Times of India, Shri Dilip Padgaonkar said that public sector broadcasting has great opportunities as well as challenges thrown up by the multiplication of broadcasting channels in the last few years. The Chief Executive Officer, Prasar Bharati Corporation, Shri K.S. Sarma said that Doordarshan and All India Radio have adopted the latest technologies and a great emphasis is being given to invest in quality programmes. He said, the media revolution both in technology and the globalisation has brought great responsibilities on Prasar Bharati as a Public Sector Broadcaster and it will not fail in discharging its responsibilities.
