SIXTEENTH LAW COMMISSION
FORWARDS EIGHT REPORTS
The Sixteenth Law
Commission of India, headed by Shri Justice M. Jagannadha Rao,
has forwarded eight reports to the Government, so far. These reports
are: 175th report on the Foreigners (Amendment) Bill,
2000, 176th report on the Arbitration and Conciliation
(Amendment) Bill, 2001, 177th report on Law Relating
to Arrest, 178th report on Recommendations for Amending
Various Enactments, both Civil and Criminal, 179th
Report on Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers,
180th report on Article 20 (3) of the Constitution
of India and Right to Silence, 181st report on Amendment
to Section 106 of the Transfer of Property Act and 182nd
report on Amendment of Section 6 of the Land Acquisition Act,
1894.
Of the eight reports,
the first two reports have already been tabled in the Parliament
and these are under consideration of the Government. The remaining
six reports are proposed to be tabled in the Parliament during
its forthcoming Winter Session.
The Sixteenth Law
Commission was constituted on September 1, 2000 for a period of
three years. Initially, it was headed by Shri Justice B.P. Jeevan
Reddy upto December 31, 2001. Shri Justice M. Jagannadha Rao,
a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, who was appointed
as Vice Chairman of the Commission from January 15, 2001 to January
2, 2002, took over as its Chairman from January 3, 2002. The other
Members of the Commission are Dr. N.M. Ghatate and Shri T.K. Viswanathan,
who is Member-Secretary to the Commission and ex-officio Secretary
to the Government of India.
