CEMILAC APPROVES CASTINGS
FOR JFS
Centre for Military
Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), Bangalore, has formally
approved castings for Jet Fuel Starter (JFS) and those casting
which had performed successfully in TD1 and TD2 of the LCA prototype.
Additional eight sets of JFS castings have also to be produced
at Defence Materials Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad for
use with PV3 – PV5 series of LCA which are under production at
Aeronautical Development Agency, Bangalore. The JFS, also called
the Gas Turbine Starter Unit (GTSU), is an auxiliary engine used
for starting the main engine for LCA. This unit has a few complex
shaped, critical, and premium quality class A castings and indigenisation
of these was undertaken by the DMRL, under the Vacuum Investment
Casting Technology Programme. The castings are made of Nickel-based
case super alloy (CM247LC) through investment casting process.
The Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness, Midhani stipulated
the airworthiness aspects and evaluated metallurgical and mechanical
properties for compliance.
