INDIA-INDONESIA TO COOPERATE TO FACE WTO CHALLENGES
India and Indonesia
have decided to work together to face the challenges of World
Trade Organisation (WTO). Both the countries also agreed to expand
their trade relations. A delegation from Indonesia headed by its
Agriculture Minister, Dr. Bungaran Saragih called on Union Agriculture
Minister, Shri Ajit Singh here today and said that his country
would like to learn from India’s experience in Dairy development.
During discussions, Dr. Saragih said that if India, Indonesia
and China could join hands together, then their voices will be
heard in the WTO as they represent the biggest importers and exporters
of agricultural produce. Dr. Saragih said that training of personnel
and investment should be the two vehicles for agricultural cooperation
between the India & Indonesia. He also informed Shri Ajit
Singh that two Indian companies Triveni Tissues and Kirloskar
have expressed their keenness in investing in Indonesia.
India and Indonesia
had signed a MoU a decade ago on cooperation in various fields
of agriculture like crops, horticulture, fishery, livestock, joint
research and training programmes. Accordingly, both the countries
signed a Work Plan in Jakarta on 11th January, 2001.
Under the Work Plan, training for two Indonesian Scientists was
arranged in the field of Seed Production & Techniques at the
Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal. Subsequently, four Indonesian
experts were trained in the field of Pathology and Wheat Breeding
at the Karnal Centre. India has made request to Indonesia to host
training of two ICAR Scientists in the field of Coconut Processing
and Oil Palm Technology.
