OVER THIRTY THOUSAND CASES REGISTERED FOR ATROCITIES AGAINST PERSONS BELONGING TO SCs/STs


More than 30,300 cases were registered under the Scheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 for offences against persons belonging to SCs and STs during the year 2000. The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that this is over 4,000 cases more than registered in the previous year . He said that the Centre have been impressing upon the state governments and UT administrations for implementing the Act in letter and spirit and take preventive action in checking offences. He said that the provisions of the Act are also publicized for creating awareness amongst Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Minister said that financial assistance is being provided under the scheme for strengthening of administrative and enforcement machinery, relief and rehabilitation of affected persons and for generation of awareness.
