Subject: Quick
Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based Index
(Base 1993-94=100) for the month of March, 2002.
The Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for
the month of March, 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical
Organisation. The General Index stands at 182.9 which is higher
by 2.4% as compared to the month of March, 2001.
2. The
Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing
and Electricity sectors for the month of March, 2002 stand at
149.4, 188.6, and 173.1 respectively,
with the corresponding growths of 3.0%, 2.0% and 5.2% as
compared to March, 2001. The cumulative growths during April-March,
2001-02 over the corresponding period of 2000-01 in the three
sectors have been 1.8%, 2.7% and 3.1% respectively, with the overall
growth in the General Index being 2.7%.
- Alongwith
the
Quick Estimates of IIP for March, 2002, the indices for February,
2002 have undergone the first revision and those for December,
2001 have undergone the second (final) revision based upon the
updated data received from the source agencies. There are no
significant revisions in the indices for December, 2001 and
February, 2002.
4. Nine
out of seventeen two-digit industry groups have shown positive
growth during the month of March, 2002 as compared to the corresponding
month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products
have shown the highest growth of 22.8% followed by 11.8% in Transport
Equipment and Parts and 6.9% in Paper & Paper Products and
Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries as well as Basic
Metal and Alloy Industries. On the other hand, Wood and Wood Products;
Furniture and Fixtures have shown a growth of (-)13.1% followed
by a growth of (-)10.1% in Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles
(except Cotton) and (-)8.8% in Other Manufacturing Industries.
- As per Use-based classification,
the growth in March, 2002 as compared to March, 2001 is 3.7%
in Basic goods, (-)1.0% in Capital goods and (-)1.9% in Intermediate
goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have
recorded growth of 9.7% and 4.9% respectively, with the overall
growth in Consumer goods being 6.1%.

Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification
(NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of March,
2002 alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of
