ACTION PLAN TO MINIMISE ACCIDENTS ON HIGHWAYS


The number of fatal accidents, as reported by the states, during the last three years on the roads State-wise and year-wise is as given below.

A recent study by the Planning Commission puts the social cost of road accidents at about 3% of GDP.

The Government is taking following measures to minimize the accidents on the Highways:

    1. Widening of single lane to 2-lanes.
    2. Widening of selected 2-lane sections to 4/6 lane
    3. Improvement of road geometrics
    4. Construction of bypasses
    5. Reconstruction of weak and narrow bridges and culverts
    6. Providing paved shoulders
    7. Strengthening weak pavements
    8. Junction improvements
    9. Replacement of level crossings by road over-bridges
    10. Retro-reflective road signs
    11. Thermoplastic road markings
    12. Provision of parking lay byes
    13. Provision of Service Roads
    14. Wayside amenities on high traffic density corridors, and
    15. Creation of awareness amongst various categories of Road Users, etc.
