WASTAGE OF FUEL AT INTERSECTIONS

According to a study conducted by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi, in the year 1996, an estimated amount of 3.21 lakh litres of petrol and 1.01 lakh literes of diesel was consumed in idling of the vehicles at 466 intersections of Delhi per day. It has also been estimated by CRRI that 20 per cent of the journey time is spent at the intersections on account of stop and delays and, as such, approximately 20% of fuel is wasted in idling of vehicles at the intersections.

Construction of flyovers would help in eliminating the time being wasted at the intersections. The operationalisation of Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) would further help. The ban on plying of old transport vehicles and also increasing usage of Compressed National Gas (CNG) in buses, taxis and auto rickshaws would also help in controlling pollution in the capital. Efforts are also being made by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi to streamline the pollution checking system in Delhi.

This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Road Transport and Highways, Maj.Gen. B.C. Khanduri, AVSM (Retd.) in a written reply to a question of Shri Nana Deshmukh in Rajya Sabha today.
