NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA SWORN IN


The President, Shri K.R. Narayanan, administered the oath of affirmation to Shri Justice Bhupinder Nath Kirpal, a Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India in terms of proviso to clause (6) of Article 124 read with Third Schedule (IV) of the Constitution of India, at Rashtrapati Bhawan today.With this, Shri Justice Kirpal has assumed the office of the Chief Justice of India. He succeeds Shri Justice S.P. Bharucha, who has retired on superannuation. He is the 31st Chief Justice of India.

Earlier on April 12, 2002, the President appointed Shri Justice Bhupinder Nath Kirpal as the Chief Justice of India with effect from May 6, 2002.

Shri Justice Bhupinder Nath Kirpal, B.A. (Hons.) LL.B., was born on November 8, 1937. He was enrolled as Pleader in 1961 and Advocate in 1962. He was the Central Government Pleader in the Delhi High Court, Additional Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department and, thereafter, the Central Government Standing Counsel since 1975. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on November 20, 1979 and permanent Judge on November 19, 1983. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on December 14, 1993. He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of India on September 11, 1995. He is due to retire on November 8, 2002
