PUBLIC SECTOR CEOs CONFERENCE INAUGURATED
Shri Krishan Kant, Vice President
of India has advised the CEOs of Public Sector Enterprises to
play a major role to arrest negative trends, not only through
better governance, but also through emphasizing the core value
of the organisation, which can provide sustained nourishment for
the creative and innovative energies. The Vice President was speaking
at a conference of CEOs of Public Sector Enterprises, which he
inaugurated here today. In the new century, innovation will be
the watchword of corporate governance, he added.
In a rapidly changing global
industrial environment, industries will sorely need intellectual
and professional resources which are innovative and imaginative.
Today, globalisation and liberalisation have unleashed tremendous
opportunities. Ceasing opportunity is the hallmark of the present
day entrepreneur and one who fails to make good the opportunities
may be bypassed, he cautioned.
The Conference is jointly organised
by the Department of Public Enterprises and the Standing Conference
of Public Enterprises.
The Vice President also presented
the MOU Awards for Excellence in Performance to 20 Public Sector
Enterprises, 10 each for the year 2000-01 and 2001-02.
Shri Manohar Joshi, Minister
for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, said that his ministry
has prepared a blue-print for re-structuring of PSUs. The exercise
primarily aims at improving the overall efficiency of the enterprises.
The minister said that closure would be the last option. The government
has been making constant endeavour to safeguard the interest of
the workers in the best possible manner.
Dr. Vallabhbhai Kathiria, Minister
of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, expressed
the view that the success or failure of reforms depended largely
on the performance of the management. He advised the Chief Executives
to identify appropriate strategies to meet the challenges thrown
open due to liberalisation and to achieve the overall objectives
of economic development.
Shri B.N. Jha, Secretary, welcomed
the gathering and Shri D.K. Verma, Chairman, proposed a vote of
thanks.
