IMPROVING LEGAL EDUCATION


The Law Commission of India has undertaken a study of reviewing the Advocates Act, 1961 for improving the standards of legal education and the legal profession. The review by the Commission is in terms of its reference to revise and simplify the Central Acts.

In this connection, the Law Commission has prepared a Working Paper on the subject and circulated the same to various persons and organisations concerned including the Supreme Court, High Courts, the Bar Council of India, Bar Councils of the States, various Bar Associations and others concerned to elicit their views on the subject.

The study of the Law Commission includes legal education, professional training, professional competence, social responsibility, entry of foreign legal consultants, liberalization of legal practice, management and development of profession. The Working Paper also includes study of ills of legal profession, its remedy and discipline. In short, the study of the subject is aimed at improving general standards of legal profession.

At present, the Law Commission is in the process of receiving responses from various quarters. Its report is expected in due course of time.
