INFLATION RATE GOES UP WHILE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS FALLS

    The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers has marginally increased by 0.25 percentage point during February, 2002. It went up from 4.94% in January 2002 to 5.19% in February 2002. In February, 2001 the inflation rate was 3.02%.

    The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for February, 2002 (base 1982-100) went down by one point to stand at 466 (four hundred & sixty six) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period last year had decreased by two points.

    The Fall/Rise in index varied from centre to centre. In 51 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 14 points and in 5 centres it remained constant whereas in another 14 centres it recorded a rise of 1 to 8 points when compared to the previous month.

    During the month, Rourkela centre experienced the maximum decrease of 14 points. The decrease is mainly due to fall in prices of Rice, Mustard Oil, Milk, Onions, Vegetables and Fruits. Kanpur centre experienced the maximum increase of 8 points mainly due to the hike in prices of wheat, Atta, vegetable and fruits, tea etc. The Index remained stationery in 5 centres viz. Varanasi, Coonoor, Salem, Amritsar and Chandigarh.

    The index in respect of six main centres for February 2002 stood at the following level: -
