    The President has appointed Dr. Bizay Sonkar Shastri as Chairperson of National Commission of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Dr. Shastri who assumed the office on March 21^st, 2002, has been a Member of the Lok Sabha. He has also been a Member of the HRD Committee and of the Textile Consultative Committee. Dr. Shastri has been involved in creating awareness among people on various issues of public importance. He has also worked as a journalist, film producer and a social worker. He is a widely travelled person and has visited several countries including Russia, Germany, France, England, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary and Nepal.
