    As many as 1013 Indian feature films were cleared for release as compared to 855 in 2000 and 754 in 1999. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) issued certificates to 230 Hindi films, followed by 206 Telugu, 196 Tamil and 135 Malayalam films in 2001. Kannada accounted for 93, Bengali for 48 and Marathi 18. The CBFC also passed 248 foreign feature films in 2001, 252 in 2000 and 203 in 1999.

    Apart from these the CBFC refused clearance to 76 feature films in 2001, 97 in 2000 and 67 in 1999. Out of these, foreign films accounted for 19 in 2001, 30 in 2000 and 26 in 1999.
