ICMR BUILDING RENAMED RAMALINGASWAMI BHAVAN

   The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. C.P. Thakur, today unveiled the plaque renaming the ICMR renovated building as Ramalingswami Bhavan at a simple function here today. The late Dr. V. Ramalingaswami, a former Director General of ICMR, had intensified the concept of Regional Medical research Centres for tackling local health problems. He held the prestigious position of National Professorship until his death on May 28, 2001.

    In the commemoration meeting later, attended by several serving and former scientists of ICMR and associates, rich tributes were paid to Dr. Ramalingaswami. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Thakur said that Dr. Ramalingaswami, with whom he was also associated, did pioneering work in research on iodine deficiency and Kala-Azar. He said that the Kala-Azar eradication programme would be named after Dr. Ramalingaswami.

    The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri A. Raja; Health Secretary, Shri Javid Chowdhury; Dr. S.P. Agarwal, DGHS; Dr. N.K. Ganguly, DG, ICMR; Prof. M.G.K. Menon; Dr. P.N. Tandon; Dr. P.K. Dave; and Dr. Ramachari were among those who paid tributes to the renowned scientist. Smt. Ramalingaswami was also present on the occasion.
