GROWTH OF CORPORATE SECTOR DURING JANUARY, 2002

    During January, 2002, 1930 companies were registered in India under the Companies Act, 1956 as against 1981 companies registered during the corresponding month of the previous year and 1623 companies during the previous month. Of the 1930 companies registered during the month, 1919 companies were limited by shares.

    Besides 1919 companies limited by shares, 11 companies (including one Govt. company) were registered as guarantee during the month of January, 2002. The total authorised capital of these companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs.289.9 crores. Nine hundred and nineteen companies, limited by shares, registered during the month consist of 108 public limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs.87.2 crores and 1811 private limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 202.7 crores.

    The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month were, from the State of Maharashtra (455) followed by National Capital Territory of Delhi (428). The States of Tamilnadu (172), Andhra Pradesh (137), Karnataka (115), West Bengal (102) and Gujarat (102) also reported comparatively large number of companies registered during the month. These 7 States together accounted for nearly 79 per cent of the total number of companies registered during the month.

    The analysis of new registration by broad Industrial Classification during the month brings out that the highest number of companies were registered under the Industrial Classification " "Manufacturing" (596) followed by Financing, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services" (560) and "Wholesale and Retail Trade, Restaurants & Hotels" (382). The other important Classification under which large number of companies were registered was, Construction (152) and Community, Social and Personal Services (98) and Transport, Storage and Communication (81).

    Of the Non-Government companies, one hundred and eight each with authorized capital of Rs. 50 lakhs or above were registered during the month of January, 2002 as against 105 in the previous month and 150 in Janaury, 2001.

    One hundred fourteen companies ceased functioning, during January, 2002 either by going into liquidation or their names having been struck off under Section 560 of the Companies Act. Out of them, 58 were Public Limited Companies and 56 Private Limited. The number of such companies in the previous month was 30. Of these companies, 42 belong to the National Capital Territory of Delhi , 28 to Rajasthan, 13 to Haryaba, 11 to Madhya Pradesh, 7 to Pondicherry, 4 to Uttar Pradesh and 3 each to Gujarat, Kerala and West Bengal. Broad Industrial Classification wise out of the 114 companies, 56 belonged to Manufacturing, 32 to Finance, Insurance, Real Estate, 8 to Construction, 7 to Wholesale & Retail Trade and Restaurant and Hotel, 6 to Agriculture and Allied Activities, 3 to Mining & Quarrying and 2 to Community, Social & Personal Services. Taking into consideration additional information relating to registration, liquidation/striking off of companies, the number of companies at work as on January 2002 is indicated blow:
