Subject: Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based Index (Base 1993-94=100) for the month of January, 2002.
The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of January, 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 176.1 which is higher by 3.2% as compared to the month of January, 2001.
2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of January, 2002 stand at 147.2, 181.4, and 164.7 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 3.4%, 3.2% and 3.8% as compared to January, 2001. The cumulative growths during April-December, 2001-02 over the corresponding period of 2000-01 in the three sectors have been 1.5%, 2.6% and 2.9% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 2.5%.
3. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for January, 2002, the indices for December, 2001 have undergone the first revision and those for October, 2001 have undergone the second (final) revision based upon the updated data received from the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions in the sectoral/general indices for October, 2001, the indices for mining and manufacturing sectors for December, 2001 have undergone upward revisions of 1.0% and 1.1% respectively. The upward revision in the mining sectors index is due to subsequent increase in production of Lignite, Bauxite, Chromite, Iron Ore, Manganese Ore, Phosphorite, Dolomite and Limestone as compared to the estimated/provisional figures. The upward revision in the index for manufacturing sector is on account of upward revision in the production data reported by Development commissioner (Iron and Steel), Office of Textile Commissioner and Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats. Consequently there is an upward revision of 1.0% in the general IIP for December, 2001.
4. Twelve out of seventeen two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of January, 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
