PUBLIC ENTERPRISES SURVEY 2000-01

Overall performance of the 250 Central Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) has improved during 2000-01. The highlights of the performance of the 234 operating PSEs are given below. The other 16 are under construction.

Increase in investment in Central public sector enterprises by Rs.21,369 crore i.e. from Rs.2,52,745 crore in 1999-2000 to Rs.2,74,114 crore in 2000-01, an increase of 8.45 per cent.

Increase in Turnover/operating income by 17.73 per cent. In absolute terms, the turnover increased by Rs.69,028 crore i.e. from Rs.3,89,199 crore in previous year to Rs.4,58,227 crore in 2000-01.

Increase in Net Profit by Rs.1,322 crore i.e. from Rs.14,331 crore in 1999-2000 to Rs.15,653 crore in 2000-2001, an increase of 9.22 per cent.

Return on equity share capital (net profit to Paid-up capital ratio) was 18.17 per cent for 2000-01.

Earning per share during 2000-01 was Rs.1.82 per share of Rs.10/- as against Rs.1.74 in the previous year.

Capital employed of public sector enterprises has gone up by 9.17 per cent i.e. from Rs.3,02,867 crore in 1999-2000 to Rs.3,30,649 crore in 2000-01.

Foreign exchange earnings by export of goods and rendering various types of services has increased to Rs.24,772 crore in 2000-01 from Rs.19,737 crore during 1999-00, an increase of 25.51 per cent.

Central Public Sector Enterprises have declared a dividend of Rs.8,260 crore in 2000-01 as against Rs.5,455 crore during 1999-00, an increase of 51.4 per cent. The dividend pay out ratio has gone up to 52.77 per cent as against 38.06 per cent in the previous year.

The contribution to the Central Exchequer by way of excise duty, customs duty, corporate tax, interest on central Government loans, dividend and other duties and taxes has gone up by Rs.4,821 crore i.e. from Rs.56,157 crore to Rs.60978 crore, an increase of 8.58 per cent.
