STEEL EXPORTS UP 4.85 PER CENT

    The export of finished steel and semis during the period April 2001 to January 2002 have been estimated at 25.25 lakh tonnes showing an increase of 4.85 per cent as compared to the corresponding period last year. The total production of finished steel during this period has been provisionally estimated at 24.62 million tonnes against the production of 24.50 million tonnes during the same period of last fiscal. The total production of pig iron during these 10 months has been estimated at 3.22 million tonnes against the production of 2.92 million tonnes during the same period last year. Pig iron production has registered an increase of 10.2 per cent during this period.

    The production of saleable steel in the integrated and other steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), during this period, has been 7.82 million tonnes representing 96 per cent of the target. Vizag Steel Plant (VSP) has produced 2.24 million tonnes of saleable steel against a target of 1.98 million tonnes. National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC) during this period, has produced 12.3 million tonnes of iron ore and 66715 carats of diamond against the targets of 12.2 million tonnes and 58781 carats. Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL) has produced 43.70 lakh tonnes of iron ore concentrates and 24.98 lakh tonnes of pellets representing 95 per cent and 81 per cent of the targets respectively.

    During this period the Manganese Ore (India) Ltd. (MOIL) has produced 5.4 lakh tonnes of manganese ore and 7630 tonnes of Ferro Manganese. The value of scrap etc. disposed of by Metal Scrap Trading Corporation Ltd. (MSTC) during these 10 months was to the tune of Rs.430 crore as against Rs.461 crore during the same period last year.
