JUSTICE VENKATACHALIAH RELEASES REPORT ON VOLUNTARY PRISON SERVICES

    The Chairman, National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution of India, Shri Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah released a Report on Pilot Project for Law Students’ Voluntary Prison Services 2000 2001 prepared by the students of the Faculty of Law, Delhi University under the guidance of Prof. B.B. Pande, here today.

    Speaking on the occasion, Justice Venkatachaliah said that the work done by the Law students of Delhi University would sensitize the society towards burgeoning population of prisoners where more than eighty per cent were undertrial prisoners who could have been out and enjoyed their freedom had proper legal help been provided to them. He further said, the report was intended to enhance the human rights of prisoners.

    The project Coordinator, Prof. Pande thanked Justice Venkatachaliah for the inspiration, guidance and help given by him in his earlier capacity as Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission. Justice Venkatachaliah is a former Chief Justice of India.
