INFLATION RATE & CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS FALLS

    The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed a marginal fall of 0.22 percentage point during January, 2002. It went down from 5.16 % in December 2001 to 4.94 % in January, 2002. In January, 2001 the inflation rate was 3.25 %.

    The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for January, 2002 (base 1982-100) went down by two points to stand at 467 (four hundred & sixty seven) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period last year had decreased by one point.

    The Fall/Rise in index varied from centre to centre. In 49 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 14 points and in 4 centres it remained constant whereas in another 17 centres it recorded an increase of 1 to 16 points when compared to the previous month.

    During the month, Rangapara-Tezpur centre (Assam) experienced the maximum decrease of 14 points. The decrease is mainly due to fall in prices of Rice, Onions, Vegetables and Fruits, Gur etc. Chandigarh centre experienced the maximum increase of 16 points mainly due to the hike in prices of Kerosene Oil and rise in House Rent. The Index remained stationery in 4 centres viz. Gudur (Andhra Pradesh), Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), Bhopal (Madhya Paradesh) and Tiruchirapally (Tamil Nadu).

    The index in respect of six main centres for January, 2002 stood at the following level: -
