INDIAN
ARMY CONTINGENT ON UN MISSION IN ETHIOPIA
– ERITREA (UNMEE)
Indian Army contingent,
earmarked for United Nations Mission in Ethiopia – Eritrea (UNMEE)
was seen off by Lt Gen R S Kadyan, DCOAS (T&C) here today.
Indian Army had provided
contingent of 1549 personnel in UNMEE on commencement of the mission
in Mar 2001. 27 RAJPUT group has now been earmarked to relieve
the first Indian Contingent.
Indian Army has participated
in various UN Peacekeeping Operations over the years and has performed
creditably due to their professional conduct and even handed approach
in mission areas. Indian Army Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks have
even made supreme sacrifice while serving in UN Peacekeeping Operations.
27 RAJPUT, selected
to represent Indian Army in UNMEE, has rich experience in counter
insurgency operations and acquitted itself creditably in OPERATION
MEGHDOOT in Siachen and OPERATION VIJAY in Kargil. Battalion has
been awarded two COAS appreciations, Army Commander’s appreciation,
J&K Governor’s Silver Salver, three Kirti Chakras, three Vir
Chakras, four Shaurya Chakras and 18 Sena Medals besides other
gallantry awards.
Lt Gen Kadyan while addressing
the troops said that they are the chosen ones to carry the Indian
Colours overseas and he was confident that they would return with
flying colours.
