FREESALE SUGAR RELEASES

MONTHLY RELEASE FOR THE QUARTER JULY-SEPTEMBER 2002

The free sale quota of sugar for the quarter July-September, 2002 will be released on monthly basis as a one-time measure instead of the present practice of quarterly releases. This decision has been taken by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution on representations from the Apex Bodies of Indian Sugar Industry , though the government is committed to phased-decontrol of sugar.

Government has received representations from the apex bodies of the Indian Sugar Industry, viz., Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) and National Co-operative Sugar Factories Federation (NCSFF) that the present practice of quarterly release of freesale sugar has eroded market confidence as a result of which the prices of sugar have been showing a declining trend. The apex bodies have represented that considering the need to expedite payment of cane price dues certain degree of price stability in sugar is needed, and, therefore, they have requested Government to consider making monthly releases of freesale sugar.
