SPECIAL REHABILITATION PACKAGE FOR BRL

The Government has approved a comprehensive rehabilitation package for Bharat Refractories Ltd. (BRL), Bokaro, containing assistance for implementing VRS, payment of outstanding statutory dues, guarantee for working capital loans and investments for annual maintenance repair (AMR). This was declared today by the Minister for Steel Shri Braja Kishore Tripathy while reviewing the 2001-02 performance of BRL. The details of the package, he said, will be communicated to the company very soon.

He said that the package aims to help the company improve its productivity, cut costs and achieve higher capacity utilisation through increased working capital and investments in AMR. With this the company should be able to overcome its problems and rise as a low cost producer of quality refractory products and re-establish itself as a market leader. The Minister asked BRL to harness its inherent strengths properly and achieve a successful turnaround.

BRL during 2001-02 tried to arrange input material to the extent possible with available resources and produced 29,425 tonnes valued at Rs.46.41 crore and despatched 31,390 tonnes valued at Rs.49.80 crore. The net loss of the Company reduced by Rs.12 crore during the year due to reduced manpower and other cost control measures implemented vigorously.

BRL reduced the manpower by further 230 employees with the grant received from Government of India during the period. Inspite of adverse market condition, BRL could secure order for supply of Magnesia Carbon Bricks for 300 tonnes LD converter of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) on turn-key basis.

The Company tried to produce value added items as required by SAIL Steel Plants and RINL. The Resin Bonded Mudgun Mass was supplied during the year to TISCO and BSL also. Blast Furnace Trough Management at Bhilai Steel Plant and Bokaro and Tundish Management at BSL are two other important areas where BRL has proved their capability. BRL also developed Hoogoven Checker Bricks and done trial production during the year. Encouraged with this, some special equipments was also ordered to be installed so that in future the requirement of Hoogoven Checker Bricks of SAIL can be taken care of. With the help of Bhilai Steel Plant, Magnesia Carbon Bricks for converter and VAD Ladle was produced and supplied from Bhilai Refractories Plant (BRP) during the year on conversion cost basis.
