CIVIC SENSE MUST BE INCULCATED IN CHILDREN: HOME MINISTER

MILLENNIUM PARK INAUGURATED


Home Minister Shri L. K. Advani underlined the need for inculcating civic sense in children so that the green areas and city landscape could be maintained properly, free from litter. Inaugurating the Millennium Park here today, Shri Advani said that merely developing new parks and green areas would not help in bringing down the pollution level in a city unless accompanied by proper maintenance and civic sense.

Observing that Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world, Shri Advani stressed the need for reducing pollution in the national capital by creating more green spaces. He also agreed to the suggestion of renaming the Millennium Park as Indraprastha Park.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Shri Ananth Kumar said that greening of national capital and reviving the history of Delhi would be taken up on a priority basis. Underlining the need for preserving, protecting and strengthening our architectural and cultural legacy, the Minister pointed out that memories of our national and historical figures should be kept alive to inspire future generations. He further stated that a new park would be inaugurated every month for the next 18 months in Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Jagmohan said that creation and development of new parks and green spaces on river banks and fronts would help in weaving our culture with the present and it would also create center of recreation for residents staying close to the green areas.

In his welcome address, Lt. Governor of Delhi Shri Vijay Kapoor said that the Millennium Park, developed by the Delhi Development Authority over an area of 84 acres, has been divided into 5 zones – Smriti Van, Fragrant Garden, Bougainvillea Garden, Topiary Garden and Foliage Garden. He said that the park, costing about Rs. 16 crores, has been developed over a sanitary landfill. He further added that land has been allotted for construction of a new cricket stadium and a new football stadium in Delhi.

Those who were present on the occasion include Minister of State for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Shri Bandaru Dattatraya, Member of Parliament Shri L.B. Tiwari and Member of Parliament Smt. Anita Arya.
