QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2002


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of April, 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 165.3 which is higher by 2.9% as compared to the month of April, 2001.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of April, 2002 stand at 131.1, 170.4, and 160.8 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 4.6%, 2.5% and 4.9% as compared to April, 2001.

3. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for April, 2002, the indices for March, 2002 have undergone the first revision and those for January, 2002 have undergone the second (final) revision based upon the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for January, 2002 and March, 2002. The revised annual growths during the year 2001-02 over the previous year i.e. 2000-01 in the three sectors have been 1.8%, 2.8% and 3.1% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 2.8%.

4. Eleven out of seventeen two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of April, 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown the highest growth of 8.1% followed by 7.0% in Non-Metallic Mineral Products and 6.9% in Basic Chemicals & Chemical Products (except products of Petroleum & Coal). On the other hand, Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except Cotton) have shown a growth of (-)11.8% followed by a growth of (-)8.4% in Other Manufacturing Industries and (-)4.6% in Rubber, Plastic, Petroleum and Coal Products.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in April, 2002 as compared to April, 2001 is 3.2% in Basic goods, (-)1.0% in Capital goods and 2.1% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 6.1% and 4.1% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 4.7%.

6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of April, 2002 alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year including the cumulative indices and growth rates are enclosed.
