INDIA CALLS UPON ILO'S WORLD COMMISSION ON SOCIAL DIMENSION OF
GLOBALISATION TO FOCUS ON POVERTY REDUCTION
India has called upon
the World Commission on Social Dimension of Globalisation to focus
its study on impact of globalisation on various issues like poverty
reduction and development. Addressing the Asian Labour Ministers’
meeting in Geneva last night, the Leader of the Indian delegation
to the ILO conference and the Minister of state for Labour and
Employment Shri Muni Lall said that the work of the Commission
should advance the cause of strengthening the capacity of developing
countries so that they get fully integrated with the global economy.
He said these countries are being increasingly marginalised by
the globalisation process and suffer some of its most adverse
and serious and adverse consequences. He complemented the International
Labour Organisation, ILO for giving equitable geographic distribution
as well as representation to various shades of opinion while setting
up the Commission. Recalling one of the fundamental principles
of the ILO that "poverty anywhere constitutes a danger to prosperity
everywhere", Shri Muni Lall said that this is more relevant to
the Asia Pacific region where more than half of the world’s poor
live. He said that India is of the view that the first imperative
for attaining Decent Work is to provide employment to everybody.
This will automatically lead to poverty reduction and removal
of threat to prosperity, peace and social cohesion. Shri Muni
Lall said that for this the ILO should well designed and adequately
funded programmes as mentioned by the Director General, ILO at
the 13 Asian regional meeting held in Bangkok last year.
