CLEANLINESS AT RAILWAY STATIONS

Cleanliness being a continuous process, all endeavours are made by the Railways to maintain the standard of cleanliness at all Railway stations on Indian Railways. Regular checks regarding cleanliness are conducted by the officers/supervisors and corrective action is taken as deemed fit.

The factors affecting maintenance of hygiene and cleanliness are the quantum and nature of passenger traffic and the number of trains dealt with at the station. The parameters are level of cleanliness of platforms and concourse, smell and odour, use of disinfectants etc.

The various steps taken to improve the sanitary condition of Railway stations include strengthening of monitoring and supervision, besides introduction of ‘Pay & Use’ scheme of toilets, emphasis on mechanized cleaning processes, provision of washable aprons & additional dustbins, regular removal of garbage, spraying of insecticides, repairs to drains and education of public through various media. Special drives are also launched from time to time.

Suitable disciplinary action is taken against the staff who are found wanting in the performance of their duties for maintaining proper sanitation at the Railway stations.

This information was given by Shri Nitish Kumar Minister for Railways in a written reply to a question by Prof.Ummareddy Venkateswarlu in the Lok Sabha today.
