RAILWAYS UNDERTAKE REGULAR ULTRASONIC TESTING OF CRITICAL SAFETY COMPONENTS

With a view to ensure adequate safety measures ,ultrasonic testing of critical components like axles is done by Railways at regular intervals during maintenance as prescribed in the Maintenance Manuals. In addition, wheel discs, tyres and armature shafts are other moving parts of rolling stock which are subjected to ultrasonic testing during manufacture.

Important wheel profile parameters like wheel diameter and difference in wheel diameter are recorded in the workshops. Flange thickness is also checked to ensure that only wheels within prescribed limits are permitted in service.

This information was given by Shri Nitish Kumar Minister for Railways in a written reply to a question by Shri Abul Hasnat Khan in the Lok Sabha today.
