INDEX MUST REFLECT INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT

The
Minister for Human Resource Development and Science and Technology
Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi has said that the world Human Development
Index (HDI) must reflect intellectual development as well as a
society’s state of progress and living standards along with other
things. Dr. Joshi conveyed this to the UNDP resident representative
Dr. Brenda Gael when she presented a copy of the report of the
world body to him here today. The UN human development index should
also undergo certain changes in tune with the changing times,
he said. Dr. Brenda agreed with the Minister and told him that
it would be conveyed to the UNDP.
The
theme of UNDP’s Human Development Report 2002 was ‘Deepening Democracy
in a Fragmented World’. According to the Report, Norway tops the
list of total 173 countries, the last being Sierra Leone. Sweden
has taken the number 2 position followed by Canada, Belgium, Australia
with the United States taking the 6th position. India
has been ranked at 124 while Pakistan at 138 and Bangladesh at
145.
