SUPPLY OF
PIPED NATURAL GAS TO DELHI
RAJYA SABHA
Shri Ram Naik, Minister
of Petroleum & Natural Gas, in a written reply in the Rajya
Sabha, today informed that the Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL)
has developed infrastructure for supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG)
to 16,000 household consumers with a pipeline length of 250 km.
IGL plans to connect about 22,000 consumers by the end of March,
2003. IGL has plans to connect 20 lakh consumers by the year 2020
with PNG supply, which would cover major parts of Delhi. The details
of areas already covered and proposed to be covered during the
current year i.e. 2002-03 are as follows:

Sukhdev Vihar, Iswar Nagar, Zakir Bagh, Bharati Nagar, Sarita
Vihar, Jor Bagh, Asiad Village.

Shri
Naik further informed that PNG is cheaper than domestic Liquefied
Petroleum Gas (LPG). Use of PNG is safer than LPG as PNG is lighter
than air and in case of any leakage it disperses in the air. Further
in-built safety measures have been provided which ensure tripping
of regulator in case leakage of more than specified range occurs,
the Minister told the House.
