NO RESERVATION OF
SEATS FOR SCs/STs IN RAJYA SABHA AND LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF STATES
LOK SABHA
The Constitution provides
for reservation of seats to be filled by direct elections in the
House of the People and State Legislative Assemblies only for
the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The Government does
not think appropriate to extend similar reservation of seats to
the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the Upper Houses
of Legislatures.
This
information was given by the Union Minister of Law and Justice
Shri K. Jana Krishnamurthi in reply to a question from Shri Ramdas
Athawale in the Lok Sabha today.
