INCREASE IN NUMBER OF JUDGES


The Centre has initiated necessary action for compliance of the Supreme Court judgement of March 21, 2002 in All India Judges Association Vs. Union of India and Others for increasing the judge strength in respect of Union Territories. The apex court in the impugned judgement has directed that an increase in the judge strength from the existing ratio of 10.5 or 13 per ten lakh population to 50 judges per ten lakh people should be effected and implemented within a period of five years.

As for the State Governments for taking necessary action in this regard, the Centre has addressed them letter to increase the judge strength as per the direction of the Supreme Court.
