QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF
INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX
(BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH
OF MAY, 2002
The
Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base
1993-94 for the month of May, 2002 have been released by the Central
Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 168.9 which
is higher by 3.8% as compared to the month of May, 2001.
The Indices of Industrial
Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors
for the month of May, 2002 stand at 136.6, 173.8, and 164.2 respectively,
with the corresponding growths of 7.0%, 3.7% and 2.4% as compared
to May, 2001. The cumulative growths during April-May, 2002-03
over the corresponding period of 2001-02 in the three sectors
have been 5.6%, 3.7% and 3.8% respectively, with the overall growth
in the General Index being 3.8%.
Alongwith the Quick
Estimates of IIP for May, 2002, the indices for April, 2002 have
undergone the first revision and those for February, 2002 have
undergone the second (final) revision based upon the updated data
received from the source agencies. While there are no significant
revisions in the sectoral/general indices for February, 2002,
the manufacturing sector's index for April, 2002 has undergone
upward revision of 1.2% mainly on account of upward revision in
the production data reported by the Directorate of Vanaspati,
Vegetable Oils & Fats, Office of Textile Commissioner and
Development Commissioner (Iron and Steel). Consequently, there
is an upward revision of 1.0% in the general IIP for April, 2002.
Ten out of seventeen
two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the
month of May 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of the
previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown
the highest growth of 13.5% followed by 12.4% in Basic Chemicals
& Chemical Products (except products of Petroleum & Coal)
and 11.6% in Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre Textiles. On the other
hand, Other Manufacturing Industries have shown a growth of (-)
10.2% followed by a growth of (-) 6.6% in Leather and Leather
& Fur Products and (-)3.4% in Non-Metallic Mineral Products.
As per Use-based classification,
the growth in May, 2002 as compared to May, 2001 is 4.7% in Basic
goods, 0.6% in Capital goods and (-)0.4% in Intermediate goods.
The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded
growth of (-) 1.2% and 12.3% respectively, with the overall growth
in Consumer goods being 8.4%.
