DELIMITATION COMMISSION CONSTITUTED
The Government has issued a Notification
constituting the Delimitation Commission under the Delimitation
Act, 2002 with effect from today. Simultaneously, the Government
also appointed Shri Justice Kuldip Singh, a retired Judge of the
Supreme Court, as Chairman of the Commission for a period of two
years or until further orders. The other members of the Delimitation
Commission will be the Election Commissioner, Shri B.B. Tandon
and Elections Commissioners of the States and Union Territories
concerned. They have been appointed under Clause (1) of Article
243 K or under Clause (1) of Article 243 L of the Constitution,
as the case may be.
The Delimitation Act, 2002 provides
for the readjustment of the territorial constituencies for the
House of the People (Lok Sabha) and State Legislative Assemblies,
on the basis of 1991 census, without affecting the total number
of seats allocated to each State in the House of People and Legislative
Assemblies allocated on the basis of 1971 population census. The
Commission will also refix the seats for the Scheduled Castes
and Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies
of the States on the basis of the 1991 population census.
