PERFORMANCE OF THE STEEL SECTOR
IN APRIL & MAY
The total production
of finished steel from April & May 2002 has been provisionally
estimated at 5.12 million tonnes as against 4.81 million tonnes
during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6 per
cent.
The apparent
consumption of finished steel items during these two months has
been 4.45 million tonnes which is higher by 10.4 per cent than
the last April & May. The consumption of pig iron is also
up by 16.7 per cent during this period. The market price of some
steel items have firmed up and the steel industry is looking up
for a turn around.
