INFLATION RATE GOES UP WHILE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS FALLS

    The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers has increased by 0.27 percentage point during December, 2001. It went up from 4.89% in November 2001 to 5.16% in December 2001. In December, 2000 the inflation rate was 3.48 %.

    The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for November, 2001 (base 1982-100) went down by three points to stand at 469 (four hundred & sixty nine) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period last year had decreased by four points.

    The Fall/Rise in index varied from centre to centre. In 50 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 14 points and in 4 centres it remained constant whereas in another 16 centres it recorded an decrease of 1 to 9 points when compared to the previous month.

    During the month, Kolkata centre experienced the maximum decrease of 14 points. The decrease is mainly due to fall in prices of Rice, Onions, Vegetables and Fruits. Thiruvananthapuram and Quolin centres experienced the maximum increase of 9 points each mainly due to the hike in prices of rice, coconut oil, fresh fish, vegetables and fruits and electricity charges. The Index remained stationery in 4 centres viz. Chennai and Tiruchirapalli in Tamilnadu and Mariani-Jorhat and Doom-Dooma Tinsukia in Assam.

    The index in respect of six main centres for October, 2001 stood at the following level: -
