LAW MINISTER RELEASES A HANDBOOK FOR CONSUMERS

   The Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley released a book titled "Handbook for Consumers-Rights, Problems and Remedies", authored by Shri D.S. Mehta, a retired Central Media Head, at a function here today.

    Speaking on the occasion, Shri Jaitley lauded the book as the need of the time in the emerging globalisation of Indian economy wherein consumers were not only the king but always right.

    The book comprises 392 pages. It talks of consumerism as a movement to protect and promote consumer interests as a worldwide phenomenon. It is a pioneering effort to make the Indian consumers aware of their rights, highlighting the problems faced by them in today’s globalized economy and to serve as a resource guide for the consumers to look for solutions to their grievances. The book focuses on the problems confronting Indian consumers like contaminated drinking water, adulterated and substandard food stuff, counterfeit and fake goods, spurious medicines, unreliable medical treatment, supply of HIV infected blood, unsafe electrical appliances, substandard building materials, inefficient after sales service, rejection of insurance claims by insurance company on flimsy grounds and other such problems. The book includes judgements of Supreme Court of India, High Courts and National and State Consumer Commissions, consumer rights cases in agriculture, medical services, electricity, banking, airlines, business law, housing, insurance, media, telecom and automobile sector. The book is intended to help consumers in their cases against errant service providers. It also contains the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, the Consumer Protection Rules, 1987 and the Consumer Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2001. Besides, the book lists addresses of all the judicial institutions throughout the country for consumer redressal at the national, State and district level.

    The book serves as a reference guide for the Indian consumers about the ‘What’…. ‘When’ and ‘How’ to go about solving consumer grievances touching all aspects in our daily lives.

    The author of the book Shri D.S. Mehta, a noted journalist and a columnist died in December 2001.
