DSP INNOVATES

A Quality Control team of Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP)’s New Oxygen Plant, NOP Online has commissioned a dedicated line for supply of drinking water to the warm argon unit of the plant. As a result, the unit is running smoothly with zero pressure fluctuations. The desired quality of argon flow and purity is now easily available in the plant.

The warm argon purification unit utilizes drinking water for its various operations involved in the production of argon gas from atmosphere. Earlier, the unit was facing frequent problems owing to fluctuation in drinking water pressure, which resulted in choking the compressor and subsequently affecting the flow and purity of argon.

Another Quality Control team of DSP, Spiral of Coal Washery, has designed an innovative system of lubrication in the disc filter equipment. The filter plays a vital role in the recovery of fine particles from process water during coal washing operations. Earlier, in the absence of any proper lubrication systems, the shaft bearings inside the trunion head of disc filter were getting damaged. Frequent changing of bearings was not only costly but time-consuming as well.

Spiral decided to provide a long-term solution to the problem through lubrication holes on the trunion head cover and connecting these holes to the bearings. The process innovation has resulted in improvement in the bearing life of the disc filter.
