RS. 43.86 CRORE RELEASED TO WEST BENGAL FOR RURAL DRINKING WATER

    The Ministry of Rural Development has released Rs. 4386.50 lakh to West Bengal, under Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission (RGNDWM) – Centrally sponsored Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP), as second instalment during the year 2001-02. This is against provision allocation of Rs 8773 lakhs towards the State.

    The ARWSP provides safe and adequate drinking water facilities to the rural population by supplementing the efforts made by the State Governments/Union Territories. The Programme also aims to tackle the problem of water quality in affected habitations and to preserve quality of water by institutionalizing water quality monitoring and surveillance through a Catchment Area Approach.

    The Ministry has also released Rs. 40.833 lakh to Tripura for implementation of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities in three districts namely North Tripura, South Tripura and Dhalai of the State during the current financial year.

    The main objective of the awareness creation campaign programme of the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission is to inculcate hygiene sense and bring about a change in the attitude of the people towards water and sanitation.
