RS. 3.64 CRORE RELEASED TO TAMIL NADU FOR TOTAL SANITATION CAMPAIGN

The Ministry of Rural Development has released Rs.364.66 lakh towards second instalment under Total Sanitation Campaign of Restructured Central Rural Sanitation Programme to Tamil Nadu during the year 2001-2002. Coimbatore District receives 154.10 lakhs and Erode District Rs.210.56 lakhs for the Campaign.

The Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) approach emphasizes on the awareness building component and meets the demand through delivery mechanism. School sanitation has been introduced as a major component and as an entry point encouraging wider acceptance of sanitation among rural masses. Under TSC, 200 districts have been allotted to States/Union Territories all over the country. States are required to formulate Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) projects in identified pilot districts. The Programme is implemented as community led and people oriented.

In addition to this, the Ministry has also released Rs. 31.74 lakh to Tamil Nadu as second instalment during the year 2001-02 for Restructured Central Rural Sanitation Programme (RCRSP) in the State. The RCRSP moves away from the principle of State-wise allocations primarily based on poverty criteria to a "demand-driven" approach.
