FUNDS RELEASED TO TAMIL NADU UNDER TOTAL SANITION CAMPAIGN

The Ministry of Rural Development has released Rs.471.88 lakh towards second instalment under Total Sanitation Campaign of Restructured Central Rural Sanitation Programme to three districts of Tamil Nadu during the year 2001-2002. These three districts are – Cuddalore – Rs.222.87 lakh; Perambalore – Rs.178.90 lakh and Kanyakumari – Rs.70.11 lakh.

The Restructured Central Rural Sanitation Programme moves away from the principle of State-wise allocations primarily based on poverty criteria to a "demand-driven" approach. States are required to formulate Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) projects in identified pilot districts. The Programme is implemented as community led and people oriented. A demand driven approach is adopted with increased stress on awareness building and meeting the demand with alternate delivery mechanisms. The TSC is being implemented in 150 pilot districts in the country. So far 96 project proposals have been approved for the identified pilot districts and the implementation of these projects is at different states..
