CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR DECEMBER 2001: BASE 1984-85=100.

    The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of December, 2001 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for December 2001 is 394, which is 1 point less than the index for the month of November, 2001. At the major group level, the index for December, 2001 has not shown any significant decrease when compared to the index for November, 2001. The largest decrease at the major group level has been reported in the case of "Food, Beverages & Tobacco" which has decreased by 1.50%; however the index for "Fuel & Light" group has increased by 0.95%.. At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has decreased by 14.14% and that for "Pulses" decreased by 1.59% whereas the index for "Condiments & Spices" increased by 1.86%. With the corresponding All India index for December, 2000 being 375, the index for the month of December, 2001 has shown a rise of 5.1 percent over a year.

    The average index for the period April 2001 to December, 2001 works out to 389, which is higher by 5.1% over the average index of 370 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for December, 2001; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for December, 2001 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for December, 2000 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for December, 2001 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely December, 2000. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from - 2.5 to 9.9 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Chennai and the least increase in the case of Srinagar. The increases are less than 0 for 1 centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 1centre, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 14 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 21 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 21 centres and more than 8.1 percent for 1 centre.. As many as 28 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 5.1 percent and 31 centres have higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India figure.
