GROWTH OF CORPORATE SECTOR DURING NOVEMBER, 2001

    During November, 2001, 1520 companies were registered in India under the Companies Act, 1956 as against 1998 companies registered during the corresponding month of the previous year and 1631 companies during the previous month. Of the 1520 companies registered during the month, 1510 companies included four Government companies viz. Chhattisgarh State Beverages Corporation Ltd., Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Co. Ltd, Madhya Pradesh Power Distribution Co. Ltd and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Co. Ltd.

    Besides 1510 companies limited by shares, 7 companies were registered as guarantee companies during the month of November, 2001. The total authorised capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs.254.8 crores. One thousand five hundred and ten companies, limited by shares, registered during the month consist of 81 public limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs.60.8 crores and 1429 private limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 194.0 crores.

    The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month were, from the National Capital Territory of Delhi (349) followed by the State of Maharashtra (284). The States of Tamilnadu (161), Andhra Pradesh (143), Karnataka(111), Gujarat (66) and Kerala (65) also reported comparatively large number of companies registered during the month. These 7 States together accounted for nearly 78 per cent of the total number of companies registered during the month.

    The analysis of new registration by broad Industrial Classification during the month brings out that the highest number of companies were registered under the Industrial Classification "Manufacturing" (442) followed by "Financing, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services" (436) and "Wholesale and Retail Trade, Restaurants & Hotels" (317). The other important Classification under which large number of companies were registered was, Construction (120) and Community, Social and Personal Services (75)

. Of the Non-Government companies, one hundred and foruteen each with authorized capital of Rs. 50 lakhs or above were registered during the month of November, 2001 as against 116 in the previous month and 135 in November, 2000.

    Ninetten companies ceased functioning, during November, 2001 either by going into liquidation or their names having been struck off under Section 560 of the Companies Act. Out of them, 2 were Public Limited Companies and 17 Private Limited. The number of such companies in the previous month was 34. Of these 19 companies, 10 belonged to the State of Madhya Pradesh and 9 to Karnataka. Broad Industrial Classificationwise out of the 19 companies, 15 belonged to Manufacturing, 2 to Construction and one each to Finance, Insurance, Real Estate & Business Services and Community, Social & Personal Services.
