Subject: Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based Index (Base 1993-94=100) for the month of November, 2001.

1.    The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of November, 2001 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 164.8 which is higher by 0.9% as compared to the month of November, 2000.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of November, 2001 stand at 138.9, 169.2, and 156.9 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 4.4%, 0.5% and 1.7% as compared to November, 2000. The cumulative growths during April-November, 2001-02 over the corresponding period of 2000-01 in the three sectors have been 1.2%, 2.3% and 2.5% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 2.2%.

3.    Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for November, 2001, the indices for October, 2001 have undergone the first revision and those for August, 2001 have undergone the second (final) revision based upon the updated data received from the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions in the sectoral/general indices for August, 2001, the indices for October, 2001 in respect Mining Sector have undergone upward revisions of 1.1%. The upward revision in the Mining Sector's index has been due to revision in the production of important metallic minerals.

4. Six out of seventeen two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of November, 2001 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown the highest growth of 14.8% followed by 11.4% in Other Manufacturing Industries and 8.4% in Rubber, Plastic, Petroleum and Coal Products. On the other hand, Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown a growth of –10.1% followed by a growth of –8.1% in Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment and –7.5% in Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel).

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in November, 2001 as compared to November, 2000 is 3.0% in Basic goods, 1.6% in Capital goods and 0.1% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 3.9% and -2.1% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being -0.6%.

6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of November, 2001 alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year including the cumulative indices and growth rates are enclosed.
