VSP ACHIEVES OVER 8 PER CENT GROWTH

   Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VS) a public sector unit of the Steel Ministry has achieved more than eight per cent growth during the calendar year 2001 while the world steel growth showed a negative growth of –0.6 per cent. Most of the developed countries have recorded negative growth, China being the only exception posting a positive growth of over 11 per cent. The other Indian steel plants during this period had either a marginal positive or negative growth. During the year VSP has surpassed its rated capacities of 3.4 million tonne (mt) of hot metal, 3 mt of liquid steel and 2.656 mt of saleable steel. The turn over of the company during 2001 has reached Rs. 3855 crore ,the best since inception.

    The performance of the company during April to December, 2001 has been the best since inception on all fronts. The sales turnover of Rs. 2777 crore represents a growth of 20 per cent. The exports during this period has also gone up by 26 per cent over the same period last year. During December, 2001 VSP has achieved a sales turnover of Rs. 362 crore which is the best for any December since inception. This includes domestic sales of Rs. 312 crore and export sales of Rs. 50 crore.

    On production front the company, during December 2001 has achieved record production of sinter, hot metal, sized ore, base mix preparation, billets, WRM, MMSM, saleable steel and other value added productions. The average power generation of the company was 255.7 MW during the month which is the best performance since its inception.

    During the year 2001, the company has attained the position of producer of lowest cost steel and achieved the highest labour productivity among integrated steel plants. It has got second prize for National Energy Conservation during2001, best Management Award given by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and national level meritorious award for quality circle during the year.

    In this calendar year, VSP has taken steps to attain Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series Certification. With this certification, it will be the only steel plant to fully comply with ISO 9001 quality certification, 14001 Environment Standards and 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management standards
