NEW CHAIRMAN LAW COMMISSION OF INDIA

    The Government has appointed Shri Justice M. Jagannadha Rao, at present Vice-Chairman, as Chairman of the Sixteenth Law Commission of India. He succeeds Shri Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy, who resigned with effect from December 31, 2001.

    With the elevation of Shri Justice Jagannadha Rao as Chairman, the Law Commission of India will have three Members comprising Justice Rao as Chairman, Dr. N.M. Ghatate as Member and Shri T.K. Vishwanathan as Member Secretary.

    Hailing from a family of lawyers and judges, Justice M. Jagannadha Rao was born on December 2, 1935. After passing law degree, Justice Rao joined the Bar of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh in 1960. He was elevated as the judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in September, 1982. He was appointed as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court in July, 1991 and transferred as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in April 1994. Justice Rao was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in March 1997 and retired from the apex court in December, 2000. He was appointed as Vice-Chairman of the Sixteenth Law Commission of India with effect from January 15, 2001.

    Justice Jagannadha Rao has rendered several important judgements relating to Civil Laws, Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Service Law and the Law of Environment.
