INDIA AND US TO COLLABORATE IN HI-TECH AREAS OF FUEL CELLS AND HYDROGEN ENERGY

India and the United States are to go in for research in high-tech areas of fuel cells and hydrogen energy systems, climate modelling and specialised research on highly infectious diseases. This emerged at a meeting between the visiting Under Secretary for Global Affairs, US State Department, Ms. Paula Dobriansky and the Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi here today. Brain – genomics and green chemistry were also considered by the two leaders recognising them as areas of priority concern. Both Dr. Joshi and Ms. Dobriansky also discussed the progress made by the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, which was set up during the visit of President Clinton to New Delhi. The forum has already had joint workshops on nano-technology, nano-computing, brain research and agro-science.

Dr. Joshi told Ms. Dobriansky that globalisation cannot succeed if we separate social sciences from science and technology. He suggested the setting up of a Centre on green chemistry in India under the Indo-US Science Forum. He also said that the scientific community should not neglect research on strengthening the immune system of the humans. Ms. Dobriansky welcoming the suggestions of Dr. Joshi said they were of great importance to international community. She said, the US will incorporate in its international policy, the health aspect also.
