TERM OF NCRWC EXTENDED

    The Government in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs has issued a notification extending the term of the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution (NCRWC), headed by Shri Justice M.N. Venkatachalaiah, by one month from February 28, 2002 to March 31, 2002. The present term of the Commission is to expire on February 28, 2002.

    The notification seeks to modify the Resolution of February 22, 2000 stating that the Commission shall complete its work and make its recommendations by March 31, 2002.

    Earlier, the term of the Commission was extended first by a notification on February 20, 2001 until October 31, 2001 and thereafter by a notification on October 30, 2001 till February 28, 2002. The Commission was initially constituted for a period of one year from February 22, 2000.

    The term of the Commission provides for reviewing the Working of the Constitution of India and suggest measures for strengthening various provisions of the Constitution without seeking to recommend tampering of its basic features.

    The Commission has begun finalizing its reports. So far, it has issued 22 Consultation Papers on various subjects in ten areas of study identified by it for eliciting public response.
